Völklingen ist mit rund 42.000
Einwohnern und einer Fläche von 67 Quadratkilometern die drittgrößte
Stadt im Saarland. Mehr als die Hälfte des Stadtgebietes ist bewaldet.
Wahrzeichen Völklingens ist die “Alte
Völklingen Hütte”, die 1873 gegründet wurde und mit ihrem rasanten
Aufstieg die Stadt zeitweise zur reichsten des Saarlandes machte. 1986
wurden die Hochöfen stillgelegt. Seit 1994 ist diese “Kathedrale der
Industriekultur” von der UNESCO als Weltkulturerbe der Menschheit
anerkannt.

Our major landmark is the
Voelklingen iron works, first opened in 1873 with his rapid economic growth soon made the city one of the wealthiest in the
Saarland. In 1986 the iron works blast furnaces were closed. In
1994 the UNESCO made this “cathedral of industrial culture” a world
heritage site.

Just a few minutes walk from the iron works is the old town hall (Altes Rathaus), build in 1876, scene of Voice and Guitar, the neo-baroque St. Eligius church and "the church of atonement" (Versöhnungskirche) with a vast ceiling mural, which gives a unique reflection of the industrial past.
